GIF Avatars from URL

I love Xenforo but one of my biggest peeves and requests is the allowance of GIF avatars. I’ve done all the tricks and tips posted and they simply don’t handle well. I’ve had free forum software that handle gifs with no problem but with Xenforo, no avail.

Is there a way for someone to develop an add on that allows avatars to be pulled from an off site URL so that Xenforo isn’t the one necessarily processing the image? If that makes sense. I’ve seen it done on Forumotion to work around the size of gifs.

Yea I’ve done all those things and still get the "This may be a limitation issue within the software itself as we do see your upload_max and your other php limits are increased so you should not be hitting restraints from those settings at this time."
