Join the fight against COVID-19

Folding@Home is a distributed computing platform which allows you to donate your unused computing (CPU and/or GPU) power to help model protein dynamics to combat diseases like Parkinsons, Cancer, Huntingtons, and COVID-19.

You can find more about the Folding@home response to COVID-19 here: Covid19 – Folding@home

Original F@h discussion follows...

Thanks to @Steve F for bringing it up and spurring us on to create a XF team!

I've only read post 1. cba with the rest tbh.
We've been FAH for about 15 years initially for criptocurrency as this is how you used to harvest and mine Bitcoins.
Does it now work for this? Sadly, it takes years of lost cycles to make any one thing. So this is deffo long term.

I think we initially started this for cancer cures, or Alzheimers?
Anyone else F@H?

It's an amazing thing, as I said above, we've been doing it for about 15 years and it's an amazing thing. Who else is doing it?

Yeah I’ve ran into some issues on my PC, haven’t pinpointed what it is yet. Just some really bad lag type effect even when nothing is running, temps and all seem okay.

I've noticed that when I set up too many processes in f@h, I get a similar effect due to the processor constantly being overloaded. I've paused a handful of processes and it's working since. Maybe helps.

I woke up! No side effects 🤞. I guess I'll be sticking around for a while longer.

I ♥️ The NHS

Also, just FYI. I have family in America and some of the older generation I know over there hadn't had any news about getting vaccinated yet. After I got mine, my dad called his local pharmacy about it and they said they could give him a vaccination that day.

He drove down, no waiting, got the jab and was done! If I hadn't told him about it though he'd never have thought to ask.

So for anyone stateside, might be worth making a few phone calls. You might be able to get one straight away.

I had missed thread thread when it started, but actually started a team for my forum members as well! Going by the team numbers it looks like I started around the same time but slightly before XF did. We have just about reached 7,000 work units, not bad for a little RP forum. It's cool to see how many people wanted to help solve this pandemic in some way and chipped in with the research. I got my first shot and will get my second one in a little over two weeks. In my community we have a Coronavirus support area and we've decided to close it on April 1 since things are finally getting better as more and more people get vaccinated and the economy is starting to look better as well. Mainly everyone wants to put this behind them, I think. I plan to keep folding, though, to help with things like cancer.

Where at? That seems pretty unlikely they haven't had any news about it considering 66% of people in the US over 65 have had at least one dose and 38% are fully vaccinated

Without getting too political, let's just say some people in the US have very different news sources than others. I wouldn't start making any assumptions.

Virginia. He might not quite be over 65 yet, probably within a year or two of that if he's not already over that age. His wife was vaccinated weeks ago as she works in a school, himself and my siblings hadn't heard anything yet though.

Are people in the US getting their vaccination information from the news? I would have thought it would be the government's job to be contact people about vaccinations? We're getting SMS text messages from the NHS over here once you fall into an eligible group.

I thought it was interesting though, as they were quite strict when I went for mine, to ensure that you were in an eligible group. However my dad was able to just rock up to the pharmacy down the road and get one within 30 minutes of making the phone call and there was no one else waiting. So they obviously have vials and capacity.

You got to remember that in the US:
  • Healthcare is mostly done by a bunch of giant corporations with their employers as the middleman, not by the government
  • 50 states have 50 different plans for distributing vaccines
  • There's a lot of trust issues to overcome (I could make a whole post on this alone but I'm trying to avoid torpedoing this thread with an argument)
I work in education and was able to sign up through my employer for a shot at my local health department. But lots of drug stores and grocery stores are also offering shots now as well. It's not super strict here. I needed an ID and insurance card only.

Yeah, that does make it more difficult to get word out.

I mean, it’s fantastic that there is now availability in drug stores, but it does seem not everyone is aware of this, so just doing my bit to spread the word. As in our case he didn’t hear anything through work, work insurance or direct from the government. All it took was a phone call though, so if anyone you know really needs one, could be worth letting them know.

I get updates from the state Department of Health and Human Services which I follow on Twitter.

None of us in my family are eligible yet to be vaccinated - they're currently doing group 4 high risk.
Then it will be the rest of group 4 and some time later group 5 (which is us).

Our daughter is not scheduled to receive one at all as the vaccination has not been auhtorizsed for under 16's.
