Firefox 5 released - impressions ?

hmmm Now mine is doing the same, still going mental when you click the icon, but now I can paste the image.. before it wouldn't.

There hasn't been an upgrade to it that I could find, so I think it is still very hit and miss until it gets upgraded.

I don't understand this craze about version numbers. Firefox should have just released a 4.0.2 with all those "1000 improvements". That would have meant most addons would still work. In most cases, addon compatibility is only because of the max version specified inside the addon code, which would be 4.9x or something. Abandoning security patches for a version you released just couple of months ago would just piss people off. Heck, many people I know are still on the last 3x version because some addons don't yet work with 4!

This may prove to be a disastrous move for FF and disgruntled users may just move to Chrome.

Most extensions that were working in 4.0 are still working in version 5, but the compatibility check forbids them to activate.

Easy fix:
  • Go to about:config (just type this in the URL bar and hit enter)
  • Create a new boolean value (right click anywhere in the list of options and choose New->boolean), set the name to extensions.checkCompatibility.5.0 (exactly like this, spelling and case sensitivity are important) and the value to false.
  • Restart
Disclaimer: There is no guarantee that it will work. Badly written extensions may trigger errors on startup and, for the worst case, may cause crashes. So, a profile backup before trying this could be a bright idea :)

Well ... it is 6 months later from FireFox 5 ...
Now we are up to FireFox 9.0.1
Can't say I am impressed with the new version every few weeks.
Can't say I am happy with the incompatibilities.
I think I will change to Chrome for most things now.

Chrome was at 12.x in June. It is now at 16x. If you're wanting something that changes rarely minus security updates, you might want to look into Internet Explorer ;)

the chrome updates are pretty invisible, and there arent huge changes or broken addons resulting.
i switched from ff to chrome when they started with this versioning. tbh, i have no idea what version chrome i am running. it updates silently and doesnt seem to have any practical effect on my browsing, my plugins arent breaking, ui elements arent moving or being removed... its like night and day.
