XF 2.1 Editing templates vs TMS

I noticed that many styles directly edit the template as opposed to using TMS. I am working on refreshing my site and currently, all of my edits are done through TMS or extra.less. I was a bit surprised to see actual templates edited. In my experience (vB4) this was not a good idea, since it created merge issues during updates. My question is, what is the general consensus on this?

I prefer TMS, easy to turn on and off.

If you mean premade styles then template edits are the only way since a TMS can’t be exported with a style, unfortunately.
