XF 2.3 Does Xenforo do groups?

I know VB would let users make groups, does Xenforo do anything like that?

No, this functionality is not available in core.

XenForo is great as it is, but I think one of the Core-Features which are still missing are some sort of "Groups" so that users can associate themselves to certain Groups.

Maybe also having Group-Forums for each of those Groups ?

For example, XING.com is using Group-Forums (public or invitation-based), which can be applied for by moderators to "run" a certain Group, so people can set-up their own Group-Forum based on their interest and they can invite already existing members or people who are not yet members of your website to join this specific Group.

So this would be free...

Not sure about thousands, but definitely needs to be a large active forum. I am on two related writing sites and the software that both use has groups. The small, low activity one has two groups that are rarely used. The large, quite active one has dozens of groups, some of which are quite active.

(N.B. these sites aren't using XF or any other name forum software. It's a locally built custom job.)

In my opinion, groups are counterproductive 99% of the time because they waste Treads that no longer end up in the forum.
If you have a very active community, things are different, but I have never seen an active forum (with vb, invision, bbpress that has default groups) have an active groups section.
