No only when your license needs renewing

No, you have right for free upgrades for one year after purchase date, and after one year expires, you can use it, but for next one year of upgrades you need to extend your license.

Similar to above, but you buy it once. Support and upgrades are good for a year and renewable at your leisure. Forum support is always available.

When that happens you don’t have to “buy” it again. Only if you need to upgrade or get support via a ticket. You can still run your forum.

1. How much does a license cost? Do I have to renew it every year?
The current prices are listed on the purchase page.
Once purchased, a license can be used indefinitely for no additional cost; it is not necessary to renew it annually.
Included with the initial purchase are 12 months of support and updates.
After that time, you can continue to use the license but in order to download newer versions and benefit from ticket support, a 1 year extension would have to be purchased.
Extension cost depends on whether any official add-ons are attached to the license.

IMO it's better that they are just left to xenForo admins/mods to reply. Yes (hands up) I respond but only because there was obvious misleading information.

I read all the replies but I still don't feel convinced there is a clear response about how extensions work in this thread itself.

No, you do not. You purchase the license (self-hosted version currently $195) and you get updates and support for 1 year.

When you need another year of updates and support, you purchase a license extension which is priced less (currently $75).

Your forum can continue running undisturbed without updates and support, and you may purchase a license extension for updates and support whenever you wish.

I reckon xenforo should have a little chat box where the staff can help them buy the license and possibly install it for them.
