Do i need VPS hosting to run the forum?
If no what is the basic hosting requirements for running forum software

No, XenForo will be able to run on both.

VPS is far better then shared hosting because you can setup everytig yourself. But that can also be a big problem, you have to setup everything yourself

More important, if you don't know exactly what you are doing you take big risks security wise.
