Do Conversations disappear?

I thought I heard a long time ago that Conversations are only stored for a certain length of time.
Is this true?
If so how can this be controlled?
Our messages are very important to us as records.

As far as I know, Conversations stay until you 'leave' the conversation.

I've never heard of an automatic prune/archive setting.

Yes. When the last person leaves a convo it goes poof.

OK now you've got me confused. Based on this topic http://xenforo.com/community/threads/school-me-on-conversations.36772/#post-419158 I thought conversations stayed indefinitely. What am I missing?

They only disappear if ALL parties click to LEAVE the conversation. Otherwise, they stay.

"Leave Conversation" might be more aptly titled "Delete Conversation" so users know that it will go "poof".

Not really, since it doesn't delete it when other parties remain in the conversation.

I do think it would be useful, however, to have a separate Delete option (with respective usergroup permissions) so that you can explicitly delete a conversation where you have permission to do so.

I think Conversation Essentials by Syndol do this.
