Difference between "new threads" and "new messages" in watch forum options

When I choose to watch a forum there are two options.

Watch threads & watch messages.

Basically I want to, as an administrator, be notified about every new post on the forum. Is there an easy way for me to set this up?

Select 'New Messages' for all posts.

You would have to do that for every forum.

I realise this is 5 years ago, but it confuses me a bit.

I was under the impression that with New messages watched in a forum you won't get notifications of every new post as mentioned in OP here, because if you didon'tt visit a new post you were notified about, than you won't get any more notifications of new posts in that thread. (Until you do)
