Decluttering Forum

As a forum grows, threads and messages accumulate. Situations arise, where one thread with 500 replies, can be consolidated into a few hundred words. Users search the forum and get overwhelmed by the number of results. After doing this a few times, they prefer to start a new thread. Redundant threads accumulate. Post quality takes a nosedive. The search feature turns into a hunt and peck for morsels.

Are there best practices to handle this situation?

-leave all the content as is
-manually create articles as facts based on those large threads and stick it or make it their own forum category
-encourage linking to the facts/articles in threads
