Cut off Extensions in media name

I understand this suggestion but it doesn't go far enough... Many members upload photos with names like
IMG-078_20220813.jpg and in this case simply removing the extension does not help much... Unfortunately it there's not much you can do about it except forcing members to rename their uploaded photos.

@Tracy Perry Might be a good Idea but somewhat delicate if users are uploading many photos at once. The interface needs to be simple..

And they can be prompted (and take the time) to give a name to each one. Image72342343, Image 23742397423, Image103283427 looks NO better than having the extension on them. At least with having the extension, you know what image format they are in.
When I refer to "naming" them.. I refer to giving them a title. I REALLY don't want to go into a media gallery and see a title of
Image23423423423. I'd rather see View from the mountain of the bay, and I'm sure most viewers would do the same.

This is a great suggestion. I'm currently uploading hundreds of images and it would be great if "2024 Cloning Tube Scene by Wes.png" would automatically be titled as "2024 Cloning Tube Scene by Wes" instead of "2024 Cloning Tube Scene by Wes.webm" (I am using the image format conversion feature).

Someone here suggested modification of a few templates to remove the extension. I tried it and it worked. Turned out that unfortunately it only hides the extension but it's still in the URL and if you edit the title e.g. the extension is still there too. So that didn't work.

Forcing members to replace generic camera names with a brief description isn't going to work. You will lose people if you do because members don't care about these things. They just want to post pics and don't want to be forced to rename each pic. And I can't blame them. I recently visited a site who had exactly this in place and I wasn't going to do it either so I just left.

Could a regex be used upon upload to detect names such as IMG-41564546546.jpg or DSC_1025.jpg -- if these are detected, do not auto-fill the title field but require the user to supply a photo title?
Then that could be combined with this to remove file extensions, so if users upload media with descriptive file names, those file names are kept but if users upload out-of-camera file names, they must supply a title for the media.

People want to get rid of the extensions, but are ok with the numbers at the end of the images? I was able to build an addon for this. Extensions are gone but the numbers are not.
As far as the name of the image, how about require description and then pull the titles from the descriptions? Have not tryed it yet, but do you think that could work for naming each image?

That would be great, but I don't think my little community would like it. We're a small forum and I'm editing titles in the (mirrored) gallery. My members know I do this because I told them I might. But they're not helping and just keep uploading images with generic camera numbers. And I don't think they would appreciate it if they were forced to rename their images before they could upload them. And I wouldn't blame them.
I wish the system could detect where on the board an image was posted and then fill in something like: "animal", "transportation". Better even if it could read the thread title so you would get: "birds", "street photography" etc. But I'm sure that's too much to ask.

Do most people provide detailed descriptions for the images they post? If keywords could be extracted from those descriptions to rename the images with more suitable names, would that work well? Consider excluding words such as "the," "to," "and," etc.

Members post on the board and the images are automatically mirrored in the gallery.
No, I'm afraid not. There can be a short intro, like a bird species. Sometimes a bit more, if there's a story. But there are also threads where it's a steady stream of just images. Most files have the metadata embedded but that's it, so no "detailed descriptions".

The mirroring function is part of XF. It's always forum first.

Yes. I know. But people can also upload images directly into the gallery and copy the BBCode, post them on the forum.
