What is a Child Style?

For example, i have purchased a premade skin for 1.1.4, but, i have changed a lot of stuff on that skin, i've added some stuff on extra.css and i have also changed some other templates.

Now, i have upgraded my xF forum to version 1.1.5, and the author of the skin has updated it for 1.1.5.

How should i import it? as a new style or as a style with a parrent?

I would try to create a child first and then update the parent style
