Cannot reproduce Checkbox custom field

I am trying to create a custom field with a check box which is designed to "hide" a section of the forums.

I insert the checkbox field in the ACP, with an ID and description and select "checkbox" and set an option.

The result is this:


As you can see, no checkbox is displayed. This is pretty much a default theme, with just a few minor tweaks.
