Say I wanted to change from http to https how would that affect the links?
Would I need some kind of redirect in place?
    How easy is it?

It just requires an .htaccess rewrite.

    Ok, thanks.
Any idea what it would be for the .htaccess rewrite code?

    This will force HTTPS
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
    RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
or this one to remove www
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www\.)(.+) [OR]
    RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www\.)?(.+)
    RewriteRule ^ https://%2%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]

Does using SSL slow down a website?
Are there any disadvantages of using it?

It depends. With nginx and spdy, it's faster. 99% of the time with Apache, you'll not really notice a difference. There is still the SSL handshake overhead to the connections, but that's going to be negligible on most internet connections now days.

I think Apache has SPDY also.
