If try to change your avatar using Firefox 68.0.1 and Ubuntu, you can't select a new avatar. The upload box says "No file selected" after selecting a file.
I tried it here with the same result as my regular forum.
As you've noticed, the upload triggers automatically. It can happen fairly quickly, but for the most part it should be clear that the avatar has updated.
