XF 2.0 Can I Prevent Private forum threads from counting towards Thread Statistics

Apparently the members of my board can add and discovered there are some missing threads.

i edited the widget_forum_statistics to return a phrase for now.

i would like to have it so the thread count in the forum statistics widget returns the public forum thread count only.

how do i do this?
