Is there a way I can make a user invisible, emulating the "Tachy Goes to Coventry" feature of VB?

There's a member on one of my sites that keeps coming back under different IPs each time he is banned (daily!). It's incredibly frustrating. If I can make him think he's able to post, but his posts are actually invisible, then this may at least give everyone some respite!

    That functionality doesn't exist.

Rather than banning you could try discouraging.

Yeah, I couldn't see it, but was hoping there was a way via permissions or similar to achieve this (had a look but couldn't see a way).

We've tried discouraging but they're so persistent that they'll push though it .

Make it so bad that they won't want to return. Increase the loading of pages to, say, five minutes, increase the chances they'll receive a blank page, etc.

Is this based on userId? How is this done?

You can discourage the user by editing them in the ACP and ticking the option at the bottom of their details.

You can also discourage by IP address - search the ACP to find it
