Sadly, "was" is becoming more common. :( These days what I, and likely many others near my age, did as a kid growing up would now land somebody in trouble.
 
Can't even buy decent cherry bombs or M-80's any more......well, down south you sometimes can. Maybe this place sells sell 'em (actually took this pic two weeks ago)....
