Better Blogs [Deleted]

Interesting, you got one made? :) That is practical
I'm talking about your importer. It says in your resource description:

The needed features
  • A fully functional, easy to use, importer from vBulletin 3.8+ blogs, import your blogs, entries, comments, categories and attachments
  • Using LN Blogs? We have you covered. Importer for LN Blogs (compatible with XI Blogs 1.0 also)

The latest XI Blogs version, with all the bells and whistles, including multiple blogs per author, I don't think it will work anymore
I would give it a try, anyway (but backup your DB, or try locally)

I'm going to remove that from the description and only leave it as "LN Blogs"...

Nah didn't work.

@Mike Fara

I think you should re-evaluate your review. I reviewed Better Blogs a negative score yesterday but Rigel has fixed all of my issues that I mentioned in the review today. After looking at the latest update, I believe he's fixed at least two of your issues such as search integration and a need for an archive (in my own words I used index). I can now find all the blogs on my site with the introduction of the All Blogs page. That was one of my number one issues with Better Blogs other than lack of global RSS (which it now has) and privacy (which is now fixed). I haven't tested it all out yet but if it's working as it should then this is the best blog software currently on Xenforo and we should give him a chance since he was able to fix our issues. I'm even considering paying for multisite again if I can't get it working myself.

@Rigel Kentaurus

Would also take it as a personal favour if you applied this fix in your template
http://xenforo.com/community/threads/soft-responsive-paid.37010/page-20#post-461598

The code is "OK", but the order in which you have it causes that "error" with a few styles (not just that one).

The fix does not better or worsen the default style either, so its harmless, but useful.
I am hoping that will not be necessary. The newest version just uses the regular XenForo container, instead of my own, so I am hoping it will play along better with 3rd party styles

I have imported hundreds of vbulletin 3 blogs which had over 200 global categories and tags. But the categories and tags do not seem to be imported. Please advise.
In the downloads area at XfAddOns.com (Send me a conversation message if you don't have access yet) I have the latest version with support for importing Global Category from vb 3.8

There are no Global Categories in Better Blogs, so it will import them as regular user-created categories instead.

To Rigel:

Hi. I hope you don't take the review personally. It is not a blemish on your ability as a developer. In fact, I could never design such a system. I have read of the improvements, almost as if they are a result of my direct feedback. The product simply did not meet my needs or expectations. I use your Sitemaps app, and I respect you as a developer. But I also feel I should rate products and services honestly, based on my subjective opinion, not to discourage potential customers, but to let them see what it was that discouraged a single buyer, and then look at the other reviews, and descriptions, and make an educated decision.

Because I am no longer using the product, it would be unethical for me to review any new version. However, I believe you, as well as others, when they claim its been improved. I have no gripe with you, and I have an enormous amount of respect for you developing on this platform. Whats one mans cop of tea is another man's poison. If you improve the product to greatness, you won't even need my review. In time, you will have dozens, and perhaps hundreds more.

Like I told you when I felt it hadn't exactly worked for me - please keep developing this product. Don't give up on it. Do I feel its worth $40? Probably not, but my website is going through a transition and money is very scarce. It is a hard migration, that is for sure. Google still has 200,000+ old backlinks listed and we don't know what is going to happen when those disappear.

So its been a stress, and trying to find a quick fix is tough. [additional private discussion excluded]

I wish you the best of luck with your product. Do not feel bad about my review. You can't - and shouldn't - try to please everyone.

I hope this is sufficient. Given enough time it may be tried again. I wish the developer, and those involved, all the best. I am sorry if my review brought discouragement, but it was from my opinion, my view, etc... yes, things move fast. If people are happy certainly let it be. And take my opinions with a grain of salt. Quite frankly, I am honored such a response was sent.

So I tried dropping all tables that started with xfa_blog and looks like all I did was make it worse. Got this error:

I just sent you the queries to manually wipe the add-on. Since you are just reinstalling this might be fine.
After running the SQL queries it should let you install through the xml

what I must do?

That worked! Thank you. Okay two suggestions.

1. Comments count and views count on Blog Home.

2. Views count on our individual blog listings.

Coming from XI Blogs, one of the features that I thought was cool was multiple blogs but I do not feel they are needed. Instead, all blogs really need in my opinion was an option to add content to a couple pages within the blog. This way members can post a webcomic issue within one blog entry or a short story with multiple pages within one blog entry. I think that is more convenient than multiple blogs.

Resources that do this already are Library by Waindigo. Showcase also does this but to a limited extent because you can only have a few pages.

I would prefer multiple blogs....

One of the things I hear time and time again is that when forum's add blogs, they seem more like an extension of the forum and less like a blog. The goal for "better blogs" should be for it to live up to it's name and offer, better blogs.

(the more like Word Press in features & customization, the better)

There are no Global Categories in Better Blogs, so it will import them as regular user-created categories instead.
Please add global categories. I do not want to allow user created categories, because my global blog categories are exactly the same as my forum nodes. i.e. if there is a forum about topic A then there also is a blog category about topic A.

Please add a permission that allows us to choose whether blogs can be commented or not. I don't want noobs commenting blogs until their account has been manually approved.

Please add an option that lets us set the default viewing permission for Better Blogs. For instance, I'd rather all blogs be created as Members Only first and they would have to manually set it to public.

Are you reinstalling? Or did you uninstall recently?
Does the addon appear in the List Add-On section of your AdminCP? If so, which version?

xfa_blog is the main table for the blog. If it's failing at "step1" it could mean that a previous install was not completed.
