Best practices for archiving threads?

In the XF community, this one, subforums are used to archive threads. To archive a thread, is the best practice to move it?

What are the benefits of this practice? Does it affect search functionality, etc.?

It doesn't really affect anything.

Threads in this forum were archived when they were no longer relevant due to a new system being implemented (the Resource manager).
