Nice blog post!

It was interesting to read your thoughts on those shoes....I am sure I would not like the feel of them at all, the toe sox I purchased a while ago are bad enough, for all the reasons you outlined about those shoes, the toe pockets are just all wrong for my toes, so I can't tolerate them for long, my feet get claustrophobic very quickly. although I don't mind the toe-less ones, perhaps Vibram should make a toe-less semi shoe thing.

Am the other way as to this title of this thread, I hate having nothing on my feet as it feels soooo wrong. I live in trainers (other than sleeping and bath/shower) there EVER of my feet... Is there somethign wrong with me lol :C

Activities where shoes are redundant #42: Washing the car :)

Weird, I would have imagined you in a classic Land Rover, the old canvas backed,

just goes to show how wrong one can be about someone doesn't it, lovin the toe rings in the other piccies, nice touch, I prefer facial piercings myself but toe rings are cool all the same. :)

Since foot anatomy was mentioned in here in support of going barefoot through life; As far as evolution is concerned Nature didn't intend the human foot to walk across today's surfaces. Nature did intend for humans to only live half as long as we live today, just because we changed that by means of technology in the last couple hundred of years doesn't mean evolution caught up to it yet. Lastly, and that's not an issue for Kier, but Nature also didn't intend feet to carry around plumpers.

So before you go au naturel consider the implication and image the fun you'll have when your feet are all ****ed up in your 60's yet you have another 30 years to live with them.

If you are referring to modern urban surfaces like concrete, there are places in the cradle of humanity with equally unforgiving ground. It's a myth that the human foot works only on relatively soft ground such as savannah.

Not the toys fault you don't pay attention where you're walking ;).

I'm sure cavemen and peasants had footwear when they walked around on hard surfaces that aren't paved to be a flat surface :).

The last bolded bit is ridiculous, because barefoot or not 'plumpers' would still be putting significantly more weight on their feet than someone of a more regular weight. Has very little to do with footwear.

True, except that (quality) footwear is built to provide arch support.

Arch support is a misnomer. The whole point of an arch is that it is a self-supporting, load-bearing structure. As soon as you provide it with 'support' along its length, the load is no longer directed down to the end points of the arch, rendering it useless.

(and I was ninja'd)
because we have relied on footware since we were babies and our bodies evolve to our surroundings. If you wear shoes all the time your feet don't have to adapt to anything accept shoes which are pretty much all more similar to each other than any surface. The only reason you need arch support is because the muscles in your feet are underdeveloped because people baby their feet with shoes. The fact that my foot is different than yours means that a generic shoe size may actually cause damage so truly the only shoes that can offer you real support are ones custom tailored to your feet.

In martial arts training for years one thing I used to do was run barefoot on gravel (mostly as a punishment for talking in class) Because of this I can deal with things your feet probably can't as well as still maintain the sensitivity in my feet to warn me of danger "afoot"

Try walking around in a metal shop barefoot over really rough uneven pavement because you're to lazy to put shoes on ;p.

Not in this country :) , From experience OSHA will not let you walk into the machine area of any shop without safety glasses (unless the company is not worried about the 10000 fine) let alone barefoot. Walking on glass is safer than walking on metal shards and that is also from experience. Besides I don't think there is metal shards in nature...I always believed it only naturally occurred in ore. Anyways if you can walk barefoot in an oily metal strewn machine shop your an animal :)

My dad owns a metal shop, and I never listened to him about wearing footwear.

Would have gone to school barefoot (usually did when it rained because of all those ninja puddles that jumped out of nowhere...) but the teachers gave me odd looks.

I can picture your father right now near infarction saying DAMMIT PUT ON SOME SHOES ! lol

And yeah gotta love those ninja puddles, the worst is when you think it is a small one and then BANG your whole leg is in water. We have one street in my neighborhood that was not properly attached to the sewage system so it doesn't really drain when it rains heavy. Next time it happens I'll take pics...you will see kids literally swimming in the road LOL.
