Is there a way to turn my site on and off from the command line.

I've got a script that runs ever night that does the backup for me, but to make sure I'm getting a consistent backup I want to be able to turn the site on and off automatically.

I've seen a add on where you can do this by time, but as the backups take different amounts depending on what I'm backing up, I don't want my site to be off for longer than is needed.

Maybe not the most elegant way but you could just stop your webserver...

Are you using mysqldump to backup your database?

Wouldn't work as there are other sites on the server as well.

In that case there's no need to turn off your forums, mysqldump automatically prevents the database from being updated until the backup is completed.
