Need guidance migrating from vBulletin 4 + DBSEO to XenForo (1M+ posts)

Hi everyone,

My migration project has been delayed for quite some time, but I've finally hired a PHP/MySQL developer to help. He isn't experienced with either XenForo or vBulletin, so I'd like to understand the correct migration sequence before we begin.

Current setup

My questions

  1. Should I run the XenForo installer first and complete a fresh installation?
  2. At what stage should I use the official XenForo vBulletin importer?
  3. When should these add-ons be installed?
  4. Is there a recommended order for the entire migration process so that existing URLs and SEO are preserved as much as possible?
Since this forum has over 1 million posts, I'd really like to avoid making a mistake that requires starting over.

If someone could outline the migration steps in the correct order, I'd greatly appreciate it. A simple checklist or best-practice workflow would probably save me several hours (or days) of trial and error.

Thanks in advance!

There are plenty of devs in this community who have enough experience on XenForo and imports. I'm surprised that you want to hire someone from outside this community and with no experience on XF.

You don't need the "XenForo Redirects for vBulletin" plugin, but make sure you import the original VB logs. You don't need them either, but it's always better to have them to be safe. I don't remember if they're saved automatically, if it makes you select the option during the VB import.

For the redirect, you need to install the "[DBTech] DragonByte SEO URLs to XenForo 2" plugin, hoping it works.

For the forum migration, it's very simple. You simply need to install a new version of xf and install the migration MOD. Then start the migration and, when finished, rename the xf folder with the same name as the old forum folder.
