Areas where XenForo fails

It must be, how is going Xenforo to be the best forum software if they got offers that xenforo doesn,t have?

I think you need to understand what you are asking/saying...

Xenforo is FORUM software and it's damned good at that.

Event Calendars and Photo Posting have NOTHING to do with FORUM software. They are website features that many people like (and many don't), that have been bolted onto existing FORUM software, but are themselves NOT forum software. What you are asking for are addons that help round out a WEBSITE.

I get what you're saying, but having expectations of these types of things, is unrealistic when you are talking about FORUMs. If you/we get these features, great! (I personally really want a good event calendar (There's already a gallery mod)) But to expect them is a little much.

Sorry for all the caps, but... heh

I never used the Calendar/photo feature in the VB and glad xf does not come with one. If I need it, I will install a mod or something.
So clearly this is some need, others don't.

I guess it depends what type of forum you run really, will admit I never used the Calendar in vBulletin as well, only when I started using MyBB did I start thinking it could be put to good use with Movie Release dates added there. But you need to have something like that to make real use of the forum Calendar.

Most forum I see make little to no use of one. They just use it for forum members birthdays (added automatically) and leave it at that.

For me:
  • "Edited by ..." tag when posts are edited - with an x minute edit window you can set in the ACP
  • Show participants in a conversation from the list (so you don't have to open it to see who's in the conversation)
  • Wildcard search (without the need to add an * to words)
  • Sub-forums in grid/comma sep line - on homepage
  • More buttons in editor sub/sup script, etc. - or different editor
  • Articles/CMS system
  • "Exclude from search results" option for users - to selectively remove forums from search results
  • Status updates on homepage sidebar (with option to update/refresh right from the sidebar)
  • XF homegrown live-chat module

I'm sure there are a good few others but that's all that springs to mind at the moment ... :ROFLMAO:

Cheers,
Shaun :D

I would like to see the Status Updates added standard in the sidebar, just as long as you can trim and control the text length displayed with a setting.

IMO missing features do not belong in this thread. 'where XenForo fails' should be about what's wrong with what's already available. How can you call missing features a fail if you know the developers 1) have worked as hard as they possibly can to deliver what is currently available 2) have priorities regarding features; it's simply impossible to develop every possible feature you can think of in the next version 3) if a feature is 'missing' maybe that is the right choice?

XENFORO IS TOO, AN COMMUNITY SOFTWARE, Read the Homepage!

I'M MAD NOW. If xenforo gona be only the forum and nothing more, then the Social Networks will keep killing slowly the forum softwares.

lol! Yeah...ok. FB and such networks, when you look closely, allow for only small/short discussions. This thread would have lasted 2 hours before people didn't look at it. On top of that, people wouldn't write big messages like they did here. FB's downfall is it's hard to read a message when you post something really long due to the width constraints of the messages posted. I only use FB to see quick updates about things but when I want a discussion, I find a forum about it.

The only thing that could really kill forums is if, say FB, buys out xenforo and uses xF has their forum platform and has a forum for almost every niche and incorporates that into your walls somehow. It would be difficult but I'm sure they are smart enough to figure something like that out. I mean hell...they have had forums in the past (not sure if they still exist) and those were pretty desolate from what I saw.

I've not lost any significant traffic to social networks in the whole time I've ran websites, and the sites I've noticed that have lacked quality content.

XenForo is a forum platform first and foremost, and its focus is building the core software to be comparable to other forum software, not to compete with Facebook, Google+ (Where they have real content) or any other network.

Eventually we'll probably see more social features (Groups and albums for example), but currently the focus should remain on making the core as feature rich and bloat free as possible.

If you think that FB and G+ have real content god help us all.

God I hope groups and albums don't get added to the core. Those need to remain addons. I've not been to one site that groups were successful on. They lasted a few months on my site then people stopped using them.

There's too much wrong with the newly added features to start worry about extending the feature list to bloat. It's just being shown that the features that still need working on are not being utilized by people, the same folk that one more added in and will never use the new features that they think they want. Probably the same people whom will come back complaining about bloat being added. No thanks.

Anyway, whatever happens I'm sure I can apply more dirty fixes to get the current features partially working.

A forum is a community.

There's nothing to get mad about, I don't code xF or have any say in what gets added or doesn't (any more than any voice here anyway). The point is simply you shouldn't expect something xF is not (currently). It might change and such features might get added later, but the bottom line is (today) xF is FORUM software only and you should base any decisions and expectations on what it *IS*, not what you *WANT* it to be.

I understood the thread to be about where XF currently fails and seeing others had listed things they think would enhance and strengthen XF, I made my own suggestions along those same lines.

For me XF has no fails. All of the features implemented are done so to my personal liking and are comprehensively integrated and work smoothly and flexibly without being overly complicated.

I do appreciate all the work that has gone into XF to the point that I'm moving my biggest forum to XF this weekend - if that isn't putting your faith in the product and company/community ethos I don't know what is.

Where does XF fail? Well ... nowhere!!! (y)

Cheers,
Shaun :D

I meant those as add-ons, not as part of the core.

I'd say "fails" is the wrong word... failing at something implies you tried. You can't fail at something you didn't try to do to begin with.

Yes, there are some features that I wish XenForo had and a few things it could do a little better... but I haven't run across anything yet that it failed at.
