Any good ideas to deal with inappropriate usernames?

So I feel a certain sense of pride that I've reached a community size that I am dealing with my first inappropriate username.

Anyone have any good ideas on how to deal with these people? Seems like that do want to participate but seem clueless why their username may be a problem.

Thanks!

Have you explained clearly your problem with the name, including citing any of your community's rules that it violates? My first step would be to do that and offer to change it for them. If you have restrictions on name changes like once a year or whatever, make this a "free" one.

If they balk, then you'll probably need to repeat that explanation more forcefully, emphasizing the rule violation part of it, and add mention of possible sanctions. Then offer to change it again.

If they balk again, then apply the sanctions (or hand them over to your mods if that's better handled by them).

At least, that's what seems to me to be a reasonable approach. However, I have never had the problem on the site I admin, just heard about it happening.

What i do if they make an inappropriate username is instantly ban them. Why? because it's unacceptable.

1) Be sure you have usernames that you feel are inappropriate excluded in your admin settings (though with creative editing of the name many try to bypass the bad name filters)
2) The post above is a good plan.
3) This addon emails staff @ registration so you will know about the username if you need to do something. Yes, getting an email on each registration can be annoying though.

I feel like this is one of those unofficial and unexpected but still important milestones, ha. Congrats 🎉

Thanks everyone.

I moved the welcome message to the private staff forum for moderation. I then sent an email to the member politely asking him to change as it violates our rules. He was very understanding, apologized and gave me a new name.

I changed the name in the ACP and that cleared up the situation EXCEPT for the forum stats widget that still shows the old username as latest member.

I ran rebuild user cache and that didn't clear up the username in the widget. Anyone have any suggestions to get the new name showing in the latest member slot?

SOLVED: It's a cron job. Found it. Ran it. Solved it.
