Alter Ego Detector

Alter Ego Detector 1.7.8

@Liam W , I came across somehting different that no one else seems to have mentioned before. I´m unsure wether this is related to the Xenforo core or your Addon. May be @Brogan is so nice and could have a look into here too, to help sorting that out.

We are using the latest xf-version and using Audentios UI.X-style (not updated yet). For some members which are coming through one specific internetprovider, the IP´s show up as the IPv6-adresses of our own server (serving on IPv4 and 6 here). This IPv6 triggers the Alter Ego detection and the user is set into moderation queue, as of course others from the same provider registered before. Sure, it´s a false detection but took me some time to find out about the IP, even though it´s obviously.

As the IPv6 is shown even without addons activated, it seems it´s a core problem. May be even a local problem I am not aware of, but I´ve thought I´ld better let you know about that.

@Sperber I support & develop this add-on now.

IP-based alter-ego detection is disabled by default, as it isn't the most reliable detection method. It is actually unusual for IPv6 addresses to be re-used however.

Recent versions can report the particular detection method if you are using IP detection in addition to the cookie detection. You can have users reported rather than moderated if they are detected as alter-egos which allows them to signup but allows moderation staff to be notified.

I will proabbly update it so it gives the option to ignore IPv4 matches but blocks on IPv6 matches.

Is this still working? I keep watching every day users that is known to have multiple accounts but I got no notifications.

@Xon I'm getting a bunch of false positives with the past 2 releases. I know for a fact they aren't the same accounts. Any idea what could be causing it and how to fix it?

Are you using IP detection? Shared IP-based detection isn't very useful by itself.

I have the check ip option selected with the time limit at 1000 minutes, which I believe is the default since I don't think I ever changed it. Is that bad?
That means it flags an alter-ego if they share an IP in the last 1000 minutes. Can you reduce that to ~5 minutes or even disable it?
