I'm testing out my forum's user experience, and I wanted to make sure the email registration is easy. As you can see below, the admin approval setting is off. It was set to off when I checked and I've never turned it on. But when I signed up as a regular user, I got "Account awaiting admin approval" as you can see in the pics below.
There's only one thing I can think of that may have caused it. I used Guerilla mail, which is a free disposable email generator. I ran out of my own personal email addresses to use. https://www.guerrillamail.com/
