My understanding is that this is not technically a copyright infringement in most territories as no copy has been made (copyright is literally the right to copy)
This won’t stop a rights holder from trying to claim though, and there may be some merit to such a claim if you were making money from it.
It would add it via src= rather than iframe, but the concept is the same - the file is not copied it is still hosted at the original site.
Ok, thanks for that. Not sure what src is but if it does not host the image or duplicate it, then I assume it would be ok. Having said that, there is some new EU directive about image copyright.

src is bassically a link to the image (whether it's on your server or elsewhere. But unlike a regular a=href link it displays the image. So in effect it has the same result as an iframe - it's just a "portal" to the image.
Yes there is an EU directive but it doesn't change the law re: copyright, only the way the law is applied. ie in theory fewer people will "get away" with copyright infringements. There is plenty of argument as some people think it's good, others think it's bad.
