976 pixels page width. Is this the best fixed width?

Our site is set to 1000 pixels fixed width.
I see that Xenforo likes 976 pixels by default.
Why?

Mine is 992 which is about the limit for a 1024 screen with vertical scrollbar.

I use 992px fixed width. That's the max you can use for iPad.

I always use 960 for my fixed-width pages... it just seems a nice compromise for the various screen resolutions.

If width > 992, there will be a horizontal scroll at the bottom.

No there won't. Our site is 1000 px wide and the iPad just scales it.

Depends on the style and how you set up min-width, width variables.

It is/was a common grid though I forget why.

I generally prefer 960px myself.
