[8wayRun.Com] XenPorta (Portal)

I don't answer unless I have an answer. I have no answer so I don't answer.

Besides, there is caching for a reason.
The caching is set to +5minutes. Its the initial load. After the initial load the portal is fine for 5 minutes until it needs to re-load again. Ive heard this from a few people not just me, its a shame nothing can be done then...

ive noticed the same handful of problems encountered over and over and over.
its not likely that people are going to read 550+ posts before asking the same question yet again.
if i were jaxal i would address these constant issues in post 1 or 2. i think there would be a lot less people asking these same questions if he did.

Absolutely... popular mods need a mini FAQ in the first or second post IMHO, so the developer isn't seen to be ignoring people who ask questions previously asked. Price of fame I guess

I agree with the last two posts. Especially since xenForo does not have a "search this thread" feature as of yet, it would help avoid the constant questions.

Documenting is time consuming, not to mention Jaxel documenting everyone else's tweaks and addons and install issues and support issues ... and ... Addon users themselves should be Major contributers to the documentation. This is currently not possible at Xenforo.com and was never possible at vBulletin.org.

I would gladly help with the documentation.
I feel you cannot support an important product like XenPorta / XenCarta / XenMedio in one thread.
It makes very good sense to have XenPorta get it's own subforum here at xenforo.com
I hope that all "major" addons are allowed to have a subforum.
This would be available now.
One concern might be that a certain Addon could be very active at any one time - this might "Flood" the "What's New". My suggestion would be to have these subforums work differently than a usual subforum in that any activitiy (new thread, new post) in the "Addon" subforum only appears as one thread according to the rest of the forum and the Recent activity.
Effectively, the subforum only appears as one thread in the "What's New".
Once an Addon has a subforum, there can be an annoucements thread, a security alert thread, an updates thread ... etc ...

Jaxel I love your work! I love your website, and I love how well they work with Eric's designs. I know a lot of people "pester" you and I am sorry for that. But please don't let that drive you away! I would be happy to help put together some documentation for everyone else who is a little less experienced than yourself. No credit needed.

When my funds are right I plan on donaiting to you for every mod I use. Ohh and YOURE links ARE still at the bottom of every mod.

However, I feel bad that I haven't credited you for the syntax on the "unselected navigation tabs." What would be a proper way for me to credit you for that?

Thanks!

what is more time-consuming? spending a bit of time compiling a faq, or constantly being hounded with the same questions?
as far as a dedicated subforum, i dont think youre going to see k&m promoting a mod like that full stop, let alone one that they may 'compete with' in the future.

For me? neither... I usually answer a question once... then the community tends to answer the questions if they are asked a second time. I am working on a website for my mods, but I wont be working on it until AFTER XenForo goes gold.

I don't think we need subforums for major mods. I think what we need is an official XenForo wiki, like what MediaWiki has. There are a ton of user created mods to MediaWiki, yet they all have wiki pages and instructions on the official MediaWiki Wiki. I would rather have a wiki for my mods on XenForo, rather than a separate website.

I was too retarded to make this work on my forum which is installed on the root.
Hopefully i´ll get wiser as time goes on.

I would suggest that K&M should be developer friendly. Very VERY developer friendly.

Awesome !

Suforums, with my suggested tweak, are available essentially available now.

Of course I would want a wiki as well !
A wiki would help alot .... but Mediawiki tends to have a fairly steep learning curve. I know that a WYSIWYG editor has matured and it usable, but I have not tested it.
Even though a wiki would help, I think discussing aspects of major plugins requires their own threads. So I don't feel that one thread and one wiki entry is enough to support Major Addons.

Do other have problems with Keyword Cloud and native, non english, character fx the my danish æ ø å ones.. My tags got wierd without these.. Any hints how to fix it to allows those or is it not possible?

The keyword cloud was not made by me, but by Roy Tanck; according to his blog:
By default, WP-Cumulus supports the Latin character set only. This is due to a limitation in the way Flash handles text, and I won’t be able to really fix this until Flash Player 10 becomes mainstream enough.

Well if KAM wanted to use my Wiki mod; I wouldn't mind. Its very simple and feature lacking; but I think I've worked out the major bugs. Why I said a wiki would be better is because mods would not be restricted to only a single page; a mod could have several wiki pages.

May I ask what the best way to remove the original home button? Is there like a special option on the forums? I noticed one way around was to disable the portal home and have the home page set to the portal but not sure if that would be the suggested way the portal home button seams special in a way?

Options > Basic Board Information > Home Page URL > DELETE ME

I can't find the answer to this if someone could point me in the right diection it'd be great.

Using the controller to set this as the home page, I have two "Home" buttons on my nav bar (the original one and the one that this mod adds). I found the option within this mod to turn the home button off but I want to keep the one this mod adds and turn the original one off.

Is that option anywhere or does it require a template edit?

Edit as I don't think I was clear. If I delete the Home Page URL in the basic board info then it also loses the link from the logo which I'd like to keep.

Also is it possible to set a category as the recent threads source rather than just a forum?

I have 4 forums under one category that I'd like the recent threads to pull all threads from. I set the source as the category but it didn't seem to work...
