Tim Berners-Lee, then at CERN, sent a memo that started the journey we here are still on today. Social media, streaming, e-commerce and, yes, forums as we know and live them trace back to that memo.
It seems amazing to me that this has all happened in my adulthood. I got my Master's and met my wife that same year. And even PCs first appeared when I was a preteen, so that pretty much all the tech I use day to day appeared in my lifetime.
