195$ is a brazen, overpriced pricepoint for xenforo

It's often amazing at how many people complain about the price of this software.
They should try the cloud. Because at $60 a month they don't realise how easy it is.

You know the adage “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it”? That’s Khoros pricing - there’s no pricing listed, it’s “get a demo and have a chat with their sales team” pricing.
Wow, that is expensive.

I tell you, if it's anything like the implementation at Sky, it's bloody awful software. Can't even quote properly with it among other things. Dunno how they can charge so much for it.

Also, when working out the total cost, one must take into account the hosting costs as well over the year which are significant, not just the initial price and renewal fees. The starter price of $60 / month is very reasonable. Let's not give them any ideas... ;)

Was still using vB back then (I got here as soon as I could! LOL) But I'd love to see the features or lack of that XF1 had be available in a PHP 8.3 version. The software appears to be very close to our beloved vB3 and all the amazing addons here in the RM offered back then, many more for free compared to now too. Don't get me wrong, love current XF, wish I switched far sooner as it is the very best of anything that runs on later PHP. but just like cPanel, it has way to many functions I will never use. Would love to see a slimmed down "LAMP" version of XF for just simple communities. In my heart, vB3 will always be GOAT.

The cloud is way more expensive for some (probably most) folks. One of my sites would have to be on the Standard plan, so it would cost me $1,200/year. Then I would have to pay $360/year for each of my other three sites. That equals to $2,280/year for me to use the cloud, assuming none of my other sites grow outside the Starter plan limits. My current server, with Knownhost, costs me $1,230/year and handles all four sites. Even if I had to pay double for my license renewal every year I'd still save money by sticking with self-hosted.

Don't get me wrong, the cloud certainly has its place. It's super convenient, and there's no telling how many new forum owners it's opened the door for who aren't technically able to host their own server. Being cheap, however, is not one of its best selling points.

Gotta say, for multiple sites like your examples, self hosted is certainly a lot cheaper. I was thinking of a small site like mine without much traffic where costs are quite competitive compared to decent hosting, not super cheap garbage.

It’s great that Cloud works for you but you have to appreciate it’s not going to be for everyone for a myriad of reasons. Equally, Cloud is better for some for a myriad of reasons.

It’s a very individual decision determined by cost, value, expertise level, how profitable their site is. We have some customers paying thousands because that’s the level of hardware they need, the level of support they require and ultimately represents an overall saving compared to employing people to manage things for them.

It’s not for everyone and that’s okay.

I don't think the price is bad, I did consider another license for 140 when it was on sale because I had another project in mind for a while. But I was short on funds at the time.

I don't feel this project is worth buying it at 195 + additional costs of addons needed.

I think if Xenforo happens to be on sale again, I'd highly consider buying another then. If not, no big deal, I'll just focus on my current projects.

Cloud is great if you can't be bothered doing all the upgrades.
Self hosted is for long term use.

I suspect XF 3.0 will see a price jump.

Hopefully XFcloud boosts revenue to keep Xenforo thriving.

I'd be surprised to see that be the case. Considering 3.0 is supposed to just be a style upgrade, and a lot of that work having been done some time ago, I'd imagine that price increase is what happened a year ago. Although, I have been wrong before.

Yeah, like I said, it certainly has its place. I was just saying that it's not as cost effective as you might think. I can definitely see the positives in it, especially for folks who don't have the technical ability to run their own server.

Are we still arguing about this? Yes, we’d all like a brand new Porsche at banged-up Ford Escort prices, but like most things, you pay your money and you make your choice.

And I’m not being funny when I say that this is coming from someone who almost certainly has a bigger stake and investment in a different (and free) forum platform than many of you have in paid platforms. Pick your weapon of choice, go out there, make a difference.

You remind me of one of those people who visit a car brand enthusiast site to talk about how much better they think their other brand car is. You're simply being a troll.
not really.
when i look at it from a buyer i see a forum for $195 from xenforo.
when i look at it as a buyer i see a forum a blog groups and what looks like a calendar for $179.
for somebody that does not keep up with the gossip and only pays attention to cost it appears a better offering.
not every one has spent years in this pursuit.
people tend to look at the cost and go with what is cheaper even if later they have to change.

I went to add a license and price was $175. There's a discount if you already have licenses. (I have 5... Is it $5 discount per license?)
