When did the price go up? Must be recent, I presume.
Note, I'm not commenting good or bad on it as prices for everything in life inevitably increase due to inflation, I'm just curious.
No it wasn't. I paid a lot less than that in 2021.January 2019
Ultimately it’s beneficial to have the renewal date tied to the license - it means there’s no counterintuitive situations where you have access to a newer version of XF/add-on that doesn’t work with the current version of add-on/XF, and people don’t have to have up to 4 different renewals to pay per year. And in the sheer majority of cases most people start them inline as they purchase with the license or with their renewal.you have to auto renew addons even if you bought them a couple months ago....thats a strange policy
thank you to explain, that makes sense... was sort of more curious than trying to petition for 7$ or whatever, its nice to better understand the idea behind that tho.Ultimately it’s beneficial to have the renewal date tied to the license - it means there’s no counterintuitive situations where you have access to a newer version of XF/add-on that doesn’t work with the current version of add-on/XF, and people don’t have to have up to 4 different renewals to pay per year. For all the edge cases stemming from that, we can certainly help. Just contact us (and people do) and we can calculate a better renewal price so you’re not out of pocket.
i was lucky and was able to purchase my license and the domain for $25 because the owner had reached a point of exasperation with the developers of xenforo.
i have seen some of what he was upset about myself.
and really i would not pay the $195 for what is a basic forum offering trails behind what others offer.
but for a basic form it is probably one of the better offerings in the paid area if you cannot pay the higher price for the ones that offer more.
if you actually want a more functional website instead of a forum then you need to look at invision or the one from germany.
i have been looking at other software since i purchased my used license.
but right now i cannot afford to move as the price i paid was really cheap since the seller was not that happy with xenforo and was happy to get rid of his other license.
Actually, more updates for 250USD doesn't sound bad at all.A lot of the issues people complain about here would be very easily solved by considerable and more regular price increases. $195 is good value. $250 is still good value. Imagine how many more staff we could afford, how many more releases we could do and how better our communication could be with $500... That is by no means our plan. Simply a facetious way to make the point that, well, you get what you pay for, I guess.
Ultimately, the current price point represents good value in the eyes of most. If it's a little out of your reach then the next best option is sourcing a preowned license that can be transferred to you. Failing that, find another solution that represents good value to you (and we appreciate in some cases that could be more expensive, not less).
The point someone made about inflation was interesting and very valid. $195 in today's money is better value than $140 was in 2010... Unlike my energy bills which have increased over 300% in that time.
Even that wouldn’t be a particularly fair comparison because 1.0 was not as easy to develop for as 2.x is, and that’s something that can’t be easily quantified in practice. Part of that translated to more addons, and functionality that was difficult or not achievable meaningfully in 1.x.I think it's also worth making the point that the software you got in 2010 is nowhere near the same software you get in 2024. If I had the time or inclination, I'd spin up an ancient LAMP stack running XenForo 1.0 (priced at $140) for people to try and let you be the judge as to whether the features on offer now are worth the additional $55 we're charging...
XF is expensive by comparison.Or even staying in the forum lane, go find out how much a Khoros licence will set you back, then tell me XF is expensive by comparison.
I'd love to try that demo if you can find the time to set it up.I think it's also worth making the point that the software you got in 2010 is nowhere near the same software you get in 2024. You know the adage “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it”? That’s Khoros pricing - there’s no pricing listed, it’s “get a demo and have a chat with their sales team” pricing.XF is expensive by comparison.
