Classifieds: buy, sell & trade with offers, tracked deals and seller reputation 1.7.1

No permission to buy (€49.00)
1.7.1. Two phone fixes: the details now sit right under the price, and touching a thumbnail no longer freezes the page.
  • The details of a listing now sit right under the price on a phone. 1.6.0 moved them out of the bottom of the page but left them below the whole sidebar, which on a narrow screen still means a long way down. They now come immediately after the price and the buttons, with nothing wedged in between.
  • Touching a thumbnail no longer freezes the page. An invisible Quick view link was lying over the middle of every thumbnail in the More from and More in this category rows. A finger landing on it opened the quick view overlay, which stops the whole page scrolling until you tap back outside, and a mouse hovering it caught the pointer the same way. The link is now inert while it is invisible and only becomes clickable once it is actually shown, so Quick view still works exactly as before for anyone who means to use it.
  • Upload the files over the existing ones, then upgrade the add-on in the admin control panel. No database changes and no settings to touch.

1.7.0. Categories can charge to post, with a price per listing kind and a discount per user group, and they can stop asking for the item condition.
  • A category can stop asking for the item condition. A switch on each category, on by default. Turn it off where condition means nothing, for a service, a job ad or a digital item, and the field disappears from the posting form and from the listing itself. Nothing already filled in is lost. Switching every condition off in the admin control panel now removes the field everywhere rather than leaving an empty dropdown.
  • Charging to post a listing. Each category carries three prices, one for For sale, one for Wanted and one for Trade, so a car need not cost the same as a toaster and asking for something small need not cost the same as a recruiter's job ad. 0 means free, which is what every category starts at, so nothing changes until you set a price.
  • A discount per user group. A new permission, "Discount on the posting fee, in percent". XenForo keeps the highest value across all of a member's groups, primary and secondary alike, so the best group a member belongs to is the one that applies, and 100 means free. Tick Unlimited and the member posts for nothing.
  • A setting for whether renewing an expired listing is charged again, off by default. A small board charges once, a board running its marketplace as a revenue stream charges every run.
  • A listing in a category that charges is saved but held back. The member is sent through the payment profiles the board already has, and the listing goes public the moment the provider says paid, with its expiry clock starting then rather than when it was saved. Abandon the payment and it waits under Awaiting payment in My listings, to be paid for later or deleted, and is swept away after the number of days you choose. A refund or a chargeback takes the listing back off the market without destroying it.
  • A listing waiting to be paid for is visible only to its owner and to staff: it is not in search, it holds no slot in the member's active listing allowance, and nobody can make an offer on it. If no payment profile is active on the board, nothing is charged whatever the categories say, and listings are published as they always were.
  • Upload the files over the existing ones, then upgrade the add-on in the admin control panel. Four columns are added to the category table and two to the listing table. Every category starts free and still asks for the condition, so nothing changes for your members until you set a price or turn a switch off.

1.6.0. Categories can now be pure containers, posting from a category starts you in it, and the listing page reads right on a phone.
  • Categories can hold other categories and nothing else. A new switch on each category, "Members may post listings in this category", is on by default and can be turned off. A category with it off still shows in the tree, still groups its children, and still keeps any listing already filed in it, but nobody is offered it as a place to post and nothing new can be filed there. This is the clean way to build "Coins and precious metals" over "US coins", "World coins" and "Bullion" without members dropping listings in the parent.
  • Posting from inside a category starts you in that category. Open a category, press the post button, and the category is already picked on the form. A container category is never pre-picked, so you land on the form with the choice still open.
  • On a phone, the listing page now reads in the order you would expect: photos, then the price and the buttons, then the details, then the rest. The details used to sit below everything in the sidebar.
  • Swiping up or down on the photo carousel scrolls the page again instead of being swallowed by the carousel. Swiping sideways still moves through the photos.
  • The location and distance filter stacks into two full-width rows on a narrow screen instead of being squeezed side by side.
  • The labels on the three number permissions now point at XenForo's own "Unlimited" checkbox rather than saying "0 = unlimited". The behaviour has not changed: ticking Unlimited and leaving the field unset both mean no cap, and the smallest cap among the photo permission and the board setting is the one that applies. The old wording read as if you had to type a 0, which is not how XenForo's number permissions work.
  • Upload the files over the existing ones, then upgrade the add-on in the admin control panel. One column is added to the category table and every existing category keeps accepting listings, so nothing changes until you turn the new switch off somewhere.

1.5.4. Ticking every kind of listing a category accepts now stays ticked instead of coming back empty.
  • In the Admin CP, a category where you ticked all five listing kinds was quietly stored as "no restriction at all". That is the same rule, since a category with no restriction accepts everything, but the form came back with every box empty, which reads as a setting that refuses to save. The category now stores exactly what you ticked. Leaving every box empty still means it accepts every kind, as the help text says, and categories you had already narrowed are untouched.

This update brings Classifieds from 1.5.0 to 1.5.3. What each release added:

1.5.3. Featured listings shown once, clearer offer buttons, a fuller seller header, and a round of wording and phone fixes.

1.5.2. Three fixes after 1.5.1: the safety notice, a waiting period that explains itself, and the price field on phones.

1.5.1. Contact seller works again on boards where members may not start conversations, with new waiting and safety controls and a listing that answers XenForo's attachment question.

A redesigned marketplace, new ways to trade and follow a deal through, prices taken from real sales, and one hundred and twenty-six fixes, fourteen of them for security and privacy. Every board running 1.4.1 or older should upgrade.

A marketplace that looks like the rest of your board

The marketplace and listing pages were rebuilt from XenForo's own building blocks, so they follow your style, its light and dark variations and your style properties. The marketplace page gets category tabs, a filter column that folds away on phones, XenForo's filter bar with a sort menu, and gallery, list and map views. Cards put the photo and the price first, with the photo count, offers, favorite heart and seller rating.

A listing now reads like a thread: labels before the title, the seller, date, place and views under it, a photo gallery with thumbnails and the XenForo lightbox, specifications as native pairs, and a buy box that changes with who is looking. Sellers find their figures and tools beside the listing, and staff get a Staff tools menu under the title. Featured listings, more from the seller and related listings ride XenForo's own carousel.

Trade one listing for another

On listings that accept trades, a member can offer one to three of their own listings in exchange, with cash on top in either direction or none at all. A trade is negotiated like an offer (counter, accept, decline, withdraw) inside the private conversation, and accepting it closes every listing involved, so the same item can never be traded twice.

A deal tracker for what happens after the yes

Every concluded sale, whether it came through an offer, a trade or a sale marked by hand, opens a deal between the two members: payment sent, shipped with an optional carrier and tracking number, received. Members who meet in person simply confirm the handover. Both sides see where things stand on the listing, in the conversation and on a new My deals page. Idle deals send a reminder, either member can report a problem straight to your moderators, and the reviews left after a completed deal carry a Verified deal badge.

Prices from real sales

While a member writes a listing, Classifieds shows what similar items actually sold for in that category over recent months: the typical price and the range most sales fell in. Members allowed to see sale prices also get a market gauge on every listing, which places the asking price among recent sales with the usual range, the median and a verdict such as 12% below recent sales. Sold prices kept private and items that changed hands in a trade are never used.

Wanted ads that find their match

When a wanted ad and a listing for sale look like the same item, both members get an alert and each listing shows its best matches. Matches refresh in the background whenever either listing changes, and you decide how close a match has to be.

Smaller things members will notice

  • Quick view opens a listing in an overlay from the results, with its photos, price, seller and the Make an offer button.
  • The map view lists the listings it pins beside the map, and hovering one lights up its pin.
  • A price drop badge shows the first asking price struck through, with the drop, such as 20% off.
  • Target price alerts: a member sets the price they would pay and hears about it, once, when the seller comes down to it.
  • A seller can be followed straight from their listing.
  • Whole prices can drop their cents, so a listing reads €230 instead of €230.00. It is an option, on by default.

Security and privacy

Fourteen fixes. Listing titles are always plain text in the map pop-ups. Contact seller and offers now respect direct message permissions and each member's privacy settings. A listing waiting for approval can no longer be published by marking it sold and putting it back on sale. A new category placed under a restricted one is restricted from the start. Profiles, the Favorites page, reports and the Current visitors list no longer reveal listings or categories the reader is not allowed to see, and the listing form no longer hands out another member's custom field values.

And the fixes

One hundred and twelve more. Sitewide search works again for members who may not see every marketplace category. The Follow button on a seller's page no longer ends on a page not found error. Saved search alerts go out on boards that run jobs from a server cron. Deleting a member now takes their listings off the market and closes what they left open, and merging two accounts merges their marketplace too. Every option choice is now a phrase your language packs can translate, and the code follows XenForo's own development conventions throughout.

Upgrading

Upload the files over the existing ones, then upgrade the add-on in the admin control panel. New tables, columns and permissions are created automatically, and existing listings, offers, reviews and favorites are kept as they are. Trades, matching, the price guide and deals are switched on by default and can be adjusted under Options.

Requires XenForo 2.3 and PHP 8.0 or later. The complete changelog is on the product page linked at the top of this resource, and questions asked in the discussion thread get answered.
Twelve releases separate the version listed here from the one shipping today. Here is the whole span in one update, and what each part changes for your board.

One place for everything a member does

Dashboard, My listings, My offers, My searches and My favorites now share one side navigation, built the way XenForo builds Your account, with counts that show what needs an answer. The dashboard gathers the offers waiting on them, the listings about to expire and their certification into a single list, and says so plainly when there is nothing to do. My listings has a tab for every status, pages, and one clear action on each row with the rest in a menu.

Per category permissions that actually hold

A restricted category is restricted everywhere now: listings, counts, search results, profile integration, More from this seller and the price history panel. Categories take sub categories one level deep, with permissions travelling down the way a forum tree does. Contacting a seller has a permission of its own, and View listings by others is XenForo's View threads by others in the vocabulary of a marketplace. Permissions can be copied from one group onto several others, and from one category onto several others.

Custom fields your search can finally see

A listing whose Steel field says CPM MagnaCut, with no mention of steel in its title, used to be invisible to a normal forum search. Every field answer now goes into the search document, so site wide search and Enhanced Search find it. Two new kinds arrived: several choices, and dropdown or something else, which offers a controlled list and still accepts a value nobody thought of. Free text fields suggest what other members have already entered, most used first, so one field stops fragmenting into three spellings in a week. Number fields filter as a range. And a field trends report shows every value in use with its listings, its sales, its sell through rate and its average asking and sold prices.

A marketplace that closes deals properly

A Withdrawn status, because ending a listing without a sale should not mean inventing one. Listing conditions are defined by the board rather than the add-on: add, rename, reorder, restyle, retire. Categories can declare which kinds of listing they accept, so a For Sale section refuses a Wanted listing. Expiry and withdrawal close the offers that were still open, which used to leave a buyer able to accept on a listing that no longer existed. And the sold price privacy choice follows the sale however it is closed.

A posting form members finish

Rebuilt into three sections with XenForo's own form headers, with a live preview beside it showing the card exactly as it will appear. Attach files opens XenForo's overlay instead of a new browser tab. Descriptions take BBCode in the editor your members already use. A price typed with a comma keeps its decimals. Changing the category changes the listing types on offer instead of narrowing them for good.

Browsing that feels like the rest of your board

The category sidebar is XenForo's own category tree, the one the resource manager uses: parents fold open, counts sit in labels, and picking a category updates the listings, the page title and the breadcrumb without reloading. The featured and category strips use XenForo's horizontal scroller. Photographs can be fitted rather than cropped, and the marketplace header can be full, compact or off.

Feedback you can moderate

A member can edit the review they wrote. Staff can correct a review from the Admin CP rather than only delete it, recorded in the moderator log, and the list has checkboxes and a bulk delete. General seller reviews can be switched off so feedback only follows a completed deal, and seller certification can be switched off entirely.

And the fixes

More than sixty since 1.1.0. The euro was hard coded in eight places, so a board configured for dollars still met euros on the posting form. Mark sold could complete without closing the listing. Moving a listing to another category destroyed the custom field values the previous category had collected. Saved searches dropped their custom field criteria. Share icons showed nothing at all on a phone. Uninstalling the add-on stopped part way through.
Every item above came from someone running it on a real board and telling me about it, and most of them shipped within days.
Requires XenForo 2.3. The complete changelog, release by release, is on the product page linked at the top of this resource, and questions asked in the discussion thread get answered.
Range filtering on your own number fields, clearer feedback while a listing is being saved, and a spacing fix on the listing buttons.

Filter number fields by range

  • Custom fields of type Number used to filter as an exact-value dropdown, where every distinct value found in the listings became its own option. On a mileage or a year field that produced a long and useless list.
  • They now filter as a min/max range, exactly like the built-in Price filter. The two boxes sit in the Refine panel of the category sidebar, and the placeholders show the lowest and highest value currently on offer, so members know what to aim for.
  • Values are compared as numbers even when the member typed separators, so 62 400 and 145,000 are matched correctly.
  • The active range appears as a removable chip above the results, and it survives when another filter is applied.
  • Saved searches now remember these ranges, along with the other custom field filters, the listing type and the urgent only switch, which they previously dropped.

Feedback while a listing is being saved

  • Posting a listing with large photos could take several seconds with nothing on screen, and members were left wondering whether the button had worked.
  • The submit button now turns into a spinner with a "Saving your listing, please wait" label for as long as the upload runs, and returns to normal if the save fails.

Fixes

  • On the listing sidebar, the wide action buttons (Make an offer, Contact seller, Seller profile, and the owner-side Mark as sold, Edit and Feature buttons) rendered with the icon flush against the label. Those buttons are flex containers with no gap, so the whitespace between the icon and the text collapsed. They now use the same 8px gap as the favourite button, and so do the back button and the staff toolbar.
