This addon ok to use? I have a member who has gone through and deleted a bunch of attached photos because he wants not to share the location. It's a very good point and worth considering.

It is absolutely okay to use it. Protects the privacy of your users.

But -as said- it currently does not remove location data from existing (already uploaded) attachments.

If exif geo location data is embedded in the image it will be removed when uploading to your server.

XenForo 2.3 does remove geo location data by default when handling uploaded images, so no add-on is necessary for that.

If you are still using this add-on, a brand-new upgrade is now available. Please note that this version will not be released publicly.

The upgrade brings the add-on up to current standards while remaining based on XenForo 1. It also addresses several limitations of previous versions, including improvements such as thumbnail support and autorotation.

This will be the final update for this product before we close and retire our XenForo 1 development.

Just as an example, if I was to upload an image from my phone to xenforo.com that had exif location data, would that data persist ? or dos iOS remove it automatically ?

FWIW, I have never turned on "embed location data" into my iOS pictures.

In XF2, it depends on how XenForo handles the upload, so it’s not guaranteed, as far as I know.
If the uploaded image is neither resized nor re-encoded, the EXIF data remains intact. iOS itself also does not strip the geolocation (GEO) data.

In XF1, our add-on strips the data from public view, while still allowing the admin and gallery add-ons to access and display it when enabled in the settings.
