XF2 - why no sliding sidebar option?

Can I ask why the Xenforo team decided not to implement a sliding sidebar? And what are your thoughts on it generally?
If the sidebar contains anything useful at all, then it's rendered an after-thought by relegating it to below the content on narrow displays. The sidebar is either useful or it's not. If it's useful then it shouldn't be shoved down below the content.

I've considered having a slide-out sidebar.
However, hiding the sidebar with a button to reveal it would mean 99% of people would ignore the button and consequently miss the sidebar.
We'd need to have have a sidebar which makes its presence known.
Possibly by being partially split screen? Maybe 80/20 and swiping left or right swaps the 80/20 split. That might be cumbersome on portrait phones.

Any better ideas out there?

How about a narrow vertical strip down the length of the display with text to indicate what it is (e.g Sidebar, More, etc) rather than just a button at the top.

Do you mean like Reddit desktop?

There's one on the left when you're logged in on desktop. It's so incredibly discrete though I often forget it's there.

On mobile they actually have two seperate actionable menus, which is interesting:
