This addon can rename the "forums" route, but you can't remove it completely:

Forum nodes have a URL Portion setting when you edit the node in the Admin CP. That can be used to give a unique name and remove the id from the URL.

I'm not sure about questions 1 and 3, but I know for a fact that custom URL portions are part of XenForo's default functionality. ;)

Try going to the Admin CP and creating (or editing) a node. When you reach the node settings page, add text to the URL Portion text box:

For example, if I wanted my forum to be located at http://example.com/forum/news/, I'd put "news" as the URL portion.

Also, as I said, I'm not entirely sure about how you'd go about removing forum/ (and others) from your links, but you could try Jake Bunce's URL changer: http://xenforo.com/community/resources/route-changer.447/

    EDIT: Ninja'd!
