XF 1.4 Xenforo search is wack?

The more I use the search the more it disappoints.

We have a thread that mentions a keyword in its title (the actual first word in the title is the same as the search term!) and 48 times through out the thread! So pretty key term juicy, I'm sure you'll agree.

If you search for that keyword (which is one word - 10 characters long) the thread in question comes 16th in the search result!? Below threads and resources that mention the word once, and not even in the thread title.

    Loads of examples of this.

    Anyone else agree?

A default installation uses standard MySQL search - it's not something which has been developed by XenForo.

The MySQL search sorts by date, not relevance. Enhanced Search can sort by relevance.

Ok so out the box the Xenforo search does perform as I described. Granted it's MySQL but that is what you have chosen to use.

Does Enhanced Search also use MySQL then?

    No. It uses Elasticsearch.

MySQL full text search is the only viable option that will work for everyone out of the box. Enhanced Search/Elasticsearch requires an additional application to be installed on the server.

    Ok thank you.

We are not a big installation but I do want " higher quality results".

In our industry we have a lot an acronyms often three letter ones. Will enhanced search find these, as the current MySQL doesn't search for anything lower than 4 digits I believe.

You can change MySQL to 3 digits.

ES will still give better overall results though as it has weighting and relevance, and a different stopword list.

Ok thank you Mike and Brogan. Will have to have a closer look at enhanced then I think.
