XF 1.5 XenForo DataWriter unicode problem

Hi,

Im implementing XenForo_DataWriter_Discussion_Thread to manually create threads in Xenforo with info taken from another database.

However it seems that datawriter does not accept anything other than english chars. It won't add data which includes for example German Umlauts.

Is there any way to call the built in XF filters to get the data properly sanitized/encoded etc so that XF accepts it?
