[XB] Post Comments 2.0.3

No permission to download
@Ozzy47 So I just noticed that there's a way, after disabling the plug-in, that you can run something in Tools and it will take all the comments and repurpose them as regular replies within the thread by posting date. Has anyone ever done this? I'm not exactly sure to check how many comments we have, but, I'm guessing 30-50,000. I wonder if this many would be feasible?

I only ask because I know it is a free add-on and not high on the priority list, but, I haven't updated Xenforo software in multiple years, and I'm afraid of falling too far behind. Eliminating this add-on would allow me to update.

Anyone?

You want to disable ALL add-ons before upgrading anyway. And to my knowledge this product is still compatible with the new versions of xenforo.

@Painbaker What is the addon`s behaviour if I delete the addon in the future? Will it turn post comments into quotes, or will we lose them?
If I remember the original version I tried, all this really does is reformat typical thread replies into what look like comments. So I think they will just turn back into a standard thread. @Painbaker could clarify that or, if I get a chance, I'll try it on my test forum and see what it does.

They do. However you may lose some flow of the thread because the replies are divorced from the post they are replying to. Without the comment system people would use quotes but quotes are not necessary with comments so in many cases the reply could just be orphaned once reverted to the normal structure.

I think VS forums have a system whereby the user can have “nested view” and then when they disable via their preferences, the post replied to automatically becomes a quote.

That would be ideal. I did pay for some custom development of the addon for my own forum and @Painbaker did some great work. If I could have afforded any more I would have asked for that feature if it was possible.

I wouldn't mind helping to fund something that worked similarly to how VS has things... I wonder how vBulletin managed this years ago. You could have either layout - whichever you preferred. Perhaps multi quoting makes this more difficult.

I tried it on a few forums/threads but in the end I stopped using it due to member feedback - it’s definitely something only a few members actually liked. IMO on our forum It would work only as a (fully reversible) user selected optional preference. By reversible I mean that when going back to normal view the “parent” post is included as a quote the posts that were previously nested comments. I would like to have continued with financing something like this but ran out of money.

It would make the most sense to have something that can be switched back and forth like vB setup - but I'm not sure if that's possible with multi quoting. It's been so long since I've used vB that I don't remember if they even HAD multi quoting as a feature.

Standard but out of context. If appearing as a normal reply in in the order of the assigned post ID the thread would be a word jumble of context. I wonder if this is really what happens, or if they are stored with a unique ID and deleted which might be better.

it won't restore the nested comment format exactly as it was.

If anyone can give exact details about the "uninstallation / plugin stops working" and how it impacts a thread would be useful to more than few people.

Thanks.

To note, multi-quoting was introduced as a core feature in vBulletin version 3.6, which was first released as a beta in mid-2006. The option to switch between linear (traditional forum layout) and threaded/hybrid views was a standard feature in the admin control panel for versions 3.x and 4.x. Administrators could enable or disable these modes and set the default view for users.

So multi-quoting wasn't an issue. vBulletin 5 Connect adopted a different content display architecture - which is when they stopped offering the feature. I guess my question now is - does XenForo have a similar architecture where it would be problematic? If not, then something similar should be achievable without breaking things when switching back and forth.
