Why Isn’t There a Large Artificial Intelligence Forum?

Its another knife in Ebay's back. They jumped onto it, their help desk is all AI now, hard to get a human involved, and they use it to evaluate their listings, so any link in a listing and your listing is removed and violated for trying to pay away from ebay. Let alone their ever increasing fee's and charges... death by their own doing and AI helping them along.

Eventually, UBI (universal basic income) will be introduced???

Maybe one day... but it won't be in the next decade, because AI is not intelligent yet, its just a database reacting with a mathematical algorithm in-front of it. Experts thought AI would develop and consume jobs by now... and now shows just how far that currently is compared with earlier estimates on its abilities. Progress forward... but its much slower than the experts thought it would be.

Tech companies are claiming AI is helping them reduce their workforce, and media love the sensationalism, but its also not the truth. Tech all stood up and took notice when Elon sacked 80% of Twitter, gutted 80% or so of the architecture in place, and demonstrated Twitter runs just fine with 20% or less of all the crap he purchased. A year later... its still all good and much cheaper than what it was running at. Companies took notice of that, but they're in different positions and can't do that under the guise of buying a company and the new owner has rights to make changes. So they claim AI is replacing staff... but really they're just cutting back their companies because AI is consuming their bank accounts, trying to work out whether it works, what of it will work, what won't, so forth.

If the rich have invested in AI, they need to make it sound great for ROI.

As someone whose job it was to replace humans with generative AI work (before I retired to outdoors work)... the main hurdle is not the tech. I know that doesn't fit with the anti-AI narrative, but, it's been my experience that people object to being replaced (naturally) and make it very difficult to do so. Not necessarily because the work itself is difficult / AI can't do it.

Yes and No. I think that is a broad statement applicable to a limited set of fields. Totally agree, people don't want to be replaced. Honestly, its the limited logic that has not changed over hundreds of years. People thought the car would put everyone out of work. People thought the industrial revolution would put everyone out of work. People thought computers would put everyone out of work. Here we all are, still... and the realistic occurrence is that some things fold, but new things appear. People transition as a result. People struggle to transition from their comfortable roles and habits. Totally agree with you on that. But it will happen, and people will adjust with it.

Yes, largely limited at this stage to many roles that essentially sit behind a computer all day. Still, that's a hell of a lot of people, and even then, extremely limited due to the reason I put forward.

You are right, though - of course, as humans - we adapt. Still, I think it is fair to say it highly disrupted the horse and carriage profession, when the automobile became mainstream. The same thing, just on a grander scale, is true of AI.

Humans will, however, adapt. We aren't good at being bored.

Or maybe those people who actually like AI would populate the forum with ai garbage, which in turn would put off a lot of real members. I have seen this happen to forums that use an "ai assistant."
We actually are drafting new rules completely banning the use of AI in content on the forum. Discussions about AI (especially how it's ruining the music and visual arts communities), are always welcome, but we will be forbidding the posting of examples within those threads.

Forums are for human-generated content, not AI slop. If members can't think up their own ideas to post, or take the initiative to research and provide supporting details with their posts, we don't need them on our forums. If they want to find discussions about AI, they can go elsewhere.

Yer, that is his revised version. He had also stated last decade that by 25/26 we would be in the place he now put another 10 to 20 years away. I don't know the answer, I don't he knows the answer either. I think the slower it is, the better civilization handles it, because people move slower. As industries are affected, transitions need to happen, then rinse and repeat, but certainly not all at once.
