Several people have done it without issue.

Take a backup first.

One last thing, InnoDB is really like 100x longer to restore up databases. It's such a pain, and so hard to restore on big boards, any ideas ? (I'll search onto the forums).

I might be wrong, but aren't people who use drop in replacements for MySQL such as MariaDB and Percona getting better performance with backup and restoring databases?

Yup, but remember mysql default innodb performance doesnt compare to XtraDB.
