XF 2.2 Why base_url instead of <base />

I was wondering why XF templates use a ‘base_url’ template function repeatedly instead of HTML’s base tag once in the page container head tag?

I can’t remember specifics because, my word, it’s been a long time.

But the usage of the base tag in XF1 came with a heap of other issues and we ultimately considered it to be a design issue and we went with a different approach for XF2.
