When is it good to add XFES / Elasticsearch?

Is there a threshold where you would enable XFES / Elasticsearch?

As in, if a forum only has 500 threads, is there any benefit to it? Or would you wait until 10,000~ threads to enable it?

I get the faster and more accurate searches, but there might not be a point in which "similar threads" exist yet.

Should it just be setup from the beginning?

In my opinion, the time is always as soon as you can afford it. The benefits it adds are well worth it, again, in my opinion. Some of the features of it include, not even taking the speed into consideration:
  • Being able to make recent content be considered more relevant.
  • The similar threads, as you mentioned.
  • New in 2.3, the search suggestions is a big plus.
  • Being able to use word stemming, so the words "test", "tests", "testing" and "tested" all work for the same search results.
I'm sure there might be others, but these are the main reasons I have it on all my sites, regardless of forum size. It just adds convenience for the members.

XFES is a great addition. The table from the start will be indexed.
There are several add-ons that enhance the XFES system.

I already have it on my license, I just never installed it as it was a new forum with 2 introductions at the time. Now, it's up to around 500 threads and 2000 posts.

I just didn't understand from a users perspective that it would do any good with such a small amount of content, so I didn't do it right away.

I'll have to install Elasticsearch and XFES to see how it is on a smaller forum as your first point could increase engagement, if it works how I think.
