What is your self-hosted SMTP solution? We are testing Postal at the moment, with speed issues

Do you really have a (non spam) usecase where SES gets 'expensive'? You can send approximately 66,000 emails a day for $225/mo.
I guess "expensive" is relative to one's finances. I'm not wealthy and I have a list of 1.2 million people, and SES costs me $100 each time I want to email them. I'm not making any money off of emailing them.

It seems like if you have a very active, large forum, you might be sending email notifications to hundreds-thousands of people per day for 10+ different threads. I think the very large forums with 1+ million users would be better off hosting their own SMTP.

In that case I'd disable or reduce some of the email by default I.e. Activity summary emails and allow users to opt in themselves. And/or find ways to increase some ad revenues on the forums. But sending own emails in that case could work if done correctly or risk damaging IP and sending domain reputation https://xenforo.com/community/threa...-moment-with-speed-issues.221295/post-1680387

But cleaning and validating your email can help too so that you are not sending emails to invalid/bad emails = reduce SES costs. With such a large email list, you'd ideally want to clean your email list before sending out large newsletters and/or once a month
