What is Cloud?

Ok, here is a really dumb question.

I see this term once in awhile but don't really know what it is. I thought it was a form of variable space across several servers.

The way I see the word being used makes me think I am very mistaken.

Cloud - Wikipedia

Small Quote:
Cloud computing refers to the on-demand provision of computational resources (data, software) via a computer network, rather than from a local computer. Users or clients can submit a task, such as word processing, to the service provider, without actually possessing the software or hardware. The consumer's computer may contain very little software or data (perhaps a minimal operating system and web browser only), serving as little more than a display terminal connected to the Internet. Since the cloud is the underlying delivery mechanism, cloud based applications and services may support any type of software application or service in use today.

It's a generic term that covers all aspects of distributed, remote computing. When people refer to 'in the cloud' these days, the phrase is largely interchangeable with 'on the Internet'.

I was referring to the most common word normally used as a service to provide connectivity to ones personal space without having to trace back to their own PC (normally I would use my PC but I can't have it on 24/7).

I would always be referred to a service like amazon cloud or dropbox or something of the sort if I was to say "cloud" or sync services.

No one really knows for sure what "the cloud" is. I think it came about at a party, from a drunken IT guy, and everyone was impressed with his knowledge of this "cloud" thing. So everyone says it like they know what it means, but are afraid to admit they don't have a clue.

Thanks, that helps me feel a tiny bit less IT stupid. :)

The cloud buzzword wasn't started by the IT industry, but was started by companies scaling into the IT industry (y).

The 'cloud' has existed since the 90's, it just wasn't available as it is now.

Yeah, Shelly is changing her avatar for me too.

It's almost like a PHP Script for changing the image every request but XenForo doesn't accept that :p

I am responsible for the criticism section on that page:

I had to fight wars to get that section to stick. A lot of people are intellectually invested in this term and didn't like me exposing it for what it is.

I have also posted a ton of stuff about cloud computing on my forum. It's a good read if you have an axe to grind.

I'm your bff now :).

What has recently gotten me in recent years is that the IT crowd has now begun to jump onto the term just like many designers and developers did with Web2.0. The technology is nothing new (other than a few things) and all they're doing is trying to increase sales by throwing in a little pizazz.

I've made sure that any intern knows if they go around throwing buzzwords I'll make their internship even more hellish than I already would have (y).
