XF 2.1 What does "following" really mean in XF2?

I'm curious about what the option to "follow" someone is supposed to do.

It doesn't seem to give you notifications of the member's post and it doesn't seem to do anything else in practice. What is it supposed to do?

I think that is all. Alerts for new follower content sounds like an interesting idea, though.

Its there to wind members up and get them to write to admin asking how they can stop someone following them.
