XF 1.5 What does 'flat' mean when referring to a theme/style?

I see a lot of themes out there referred to as 'flat'. What dos 'flat' mean in the context of xenforo themes/styles?

Yeah, it avoids making things look 3d and focuses on a clean minimalist style. Avoids things like textures gradients etc.

Not exactly, think of it as a set of rules.. just like in music you have genres such as rock and pop. Each genre follows certain rules.

That's true, although equally true is that rules can often be bent too, for example: in the context of music genres, as mentioned, there's 'rock' & there's 'pop', while there is also the fusion thereof, as 'pop-rock'.

I would think similarly, in the context of theme design, this sort of fusion with 2D/3D could also be achievable too(?)
