This is actually how week numbers can work: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_week_date

That said, I'm not sure why you have a W53 for 2012 when I don't see it here (though I do see it on another server).

Is this maybe a problem with time zones? I just hit

28

where my OS X Calendar says, we're in week 29. Which is kinda funny, because the same command under OS X returns 28 as well.

Edit:
and Dec 31 2012 was week 53, according to my linux server.

This is fixed now. I'm actually not sure why it didn't happen here with that code.
