[UW] Forum Comments System [Paid] 2.3.14

No permission to buy (€19.95)
You have purchased lifetime on 28. Jun. 2020 and last release, before 2.3, was in March 2021. And I was not aware of any bugs that would prevent it from working until 2.3

I’ve been trying to figure out how to handle this, because I never thought something like this could happen to me — and it definitely didn’t make me happy. Unfortunately, some difficult events in my life prevented me from even logging in here.
Now I realize this could happen to anyone. It has already happened with other add-ons I’ve purchased, and they’re now gone. The truth is, I’m out at least $5,000 on these add-ons adventure — not to mention the many sleepless nights and years spent in front of the PC. So when someone complains that they had to spend ten minutes registering just to get the add-on because it was “too complicated,” it’s hard not to feel frustrated. I spent years developing it.
On top of that, there was piracy. Others took it and started selling it themselves. It was just the perfect storm.

Here are my options:
  • I’m considering uploading it to GitHub once I figure out how that works (and whether it would actually help).
  • I may also try to find someone interested in buying the rights if I decide to stop working on it.
  • The add-on can be uninstalled without losing any data — comments simply turn into regular posts with quotes.
  • It’s also possible to import comments into other comment add-ons.
Plus, I only make add-ons that I personally need. It’s simply not realistic to make real money from them (at least not for me). Since I still need this add-on for my own site, I can’t stop at least maintaining it. The site I need it for is still running on vB5 and recently completely crashed, which is why I had to update this add-on quickly — so I can finally migrate away from that mess to XenForo.
I bought vB5 when it first came out because I loved vB4 as a user. I downloaded vB5 excited to start my forum on the new version… and I couldn’t believe it was from the same company. Only years later did I learn that, allegedly, the best developers had left and created XenForo. That’s how I got stuck with that terrible vB5.
Eventually the users (and I) got used to the comments system. While XenForo is better than vB5 in almost every other way, it doesn’t have a comments feature — and none of the existing add-ons were at least as good as what vB5 offered. So I stayed stuck.
After many years, I finally decided that if no one else was going to do it, I would have too. XenForo’s team never seemed to understand how useful comments can be — they live a bit in their own nerd bubble. I still hadn’t found time to migrate, but now that vB5 has completely broken down, I need to move to XenForo quickly.

So, now that I’m working on it again, the question is: should I keep it just for myself? I feel like that wouldn’t be right. I feel a sense of duty to release it and keep maintaining it — at least that’s how I see it now that it’s already updated.
That’s why I’ve decided to offer much better prices and even a one-month free trial. People can test it properly before committing. As far as I know, I’m the only one here who offers that. It’s my way of giving back after the years I was absent. And if something like this happens again, I now will figure out a plan how to keep the add-on alive, if need.
Thank you for taking the time to provide explanations and answers because indeed it was becoming a little unclear to me.

When I saw that the add-on was no longer available, I uninstalled it to avoid a future incompatibility error. I don't know if the addon still worked on XF2.3, but it was indeed still working when it was uninstalled.

So I guess I have to re-register and pay again for the add-on I bought previously?

@ratix_gunz you have the license assigned to you already.

Also, as a bonus for you, I’ve given you a free 1-year [UW] SuperBox license. This means you can use all the existing add-ons as well as any new ones that will be released in the future—for a full year.

Oh thank you, that's a really kind gesture on your part!
Very few developers react like you, and it's truly wonderful :)
Wishing you all the best and continued success with your projects!

xffutureuser updated [UW] Forum Comments System with a new update entry:

Version 2.3.11

This fixed the inline commenting on the newest forum software, where it had stopped behaving correctly. Three things were repaired: clicking "Comment" on a post now properly opens the comment box, the box now closes by itself after you post your first comment, and the "number of comments" label now updates instantly when a new comment is added. The behind-the-scenes code was also tidied and slimmed down so it loads a little faster.

Hello,

I'm experiencing a compatibility issue between your addon [UW] Forum Comments System 2.3.11 and PixVid: Upload and Host Images & Videos 2.2.2 on XenForo 2.3.11.

Issue:
After installing [UW] Forum Comments System, the PixVid image upload button appears duplicated multiple times (approximately 10–11 times) in the reply editor, stacked vertically on the right side of the editor.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Have PixVid 2.2.2 installed and working normally
2. Install [UW] Forum Comments System 2.3.11
3. Open any thread and go to the reply editor
4. The PixVid upload button appears repeated multiple times

Expected behavior:
The PixVid upload button should appear only once in the editor, as it did before installing your addon.

Workaround found:
Disabling [UW] Forum Comments System makes the duplicate buttons disappear immediately, confirming the conflict originates from your addon.

Environment:
  • XenForo: 2.3.11
  • [UW] Forum Comments System: 2.3.11
  • PixVid: Upload and Host Images & Videos: 2.2.2
  • PHP: 8.1

Could you please look into this compatibility issue? It seems your addon may be rendering the editor template or a related hook multiple times, causing other addons that inject buttons into the editor to duplicate.

Thank you!

Hello,

I'm experiencing two issues with [UW] Forum Comments System 2.3.11 on XenForo 2.3.11.

---

Bug #1: Compatibility issue with PixVid addon — upload buttons duplicated

After installing [UW] Forum Comments System, the PixVid image upload button appears duplicated multiple times (approximately 10–11 times) in the reply editor, stacked vertically on the right side of the editor.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Have PixVid: Upload and Host Images & Videos 2.2.2 installed and working normally

Bug #2: Reactions (likes) do not update in real time

When a user clicks a reaction (e.g. "Me gusta" / Like, "Me encanta" / Love) on a comment, the reaction count and display do not update instantly via AJAX. The page must be manually refreshed for the reaction to appear.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open any thread with comments
2. Click any reaction button (Like, Love, etc.) on a comment
3. The reaction appears to register, but the UI does not update
4. Only after a full page reload does the reaction show correctly

Expected behavior:
Reactions should update instantly without requiring a page reload, as is standard behavior in XenForo.

---

Environment:
  • XenForo: 2.3.11
  • [UW] Forum Comments System: 2.3.11
  • PixVid: Upload and Host Images & Videos: 2.2.2
  • PHP: 8.1

Thank you for looking into these issues!

Thank you for looking into these issues!

Thanks for the detailed report — I've traced this and can explain exactly what's happening.

FCS isn't rendering the reply editor multiple times. What it does, by design, is add a separate comment editor under each post on the thread, so a page with ~11 posts has ~11 editors.

PixVid injects its upload button via its remote SDK (pup.js), which re-runs its injection on every editor it sees on the page and inserts a button next to the reply button each time, without checking whether it already added one. With one editor (default XenForo) it inserts once; with FCS's per-post editors it inserts once per post — hence the ~10–11 stacked buttons. This is actually a long-standing PixVid behaviour: it duplicates whenever a page has more than one editor (people hit it on plain XenForo with quick-reply + full reply too). — users report two buttons with quick-reply + full reply, and the author himself called it "some sort of xf editor bug." The robust fix is on PixVid's side — its injection needs to be scoped to a single editor and made idempotent — but that add-on is now listed as Unmaintained, so I wouldn't count on it.

In the meantime there's a clean workaround you can apply without changing either add-on. Add this to your style's EXTRA.less (Appearance → Templates, or your theme's extra.less):

.formButtonGroup a.chevereto-pup-button--XF2 ~ a.chevereto-pup-button--XF2 { display: none; }

That keeps the first PixVid button and hides the duplicates. One thing to check: the exact CSS class on your PixVid version may differ from chevereto-pup-button--XF2 — right-click one of the duplicate buttons, choose Inspect, and if the class name is different, swap it into the rule above. Happy to confirm the selector if you paste me the button's HTML.

Let me know if that sorts it out.

Thank you for the detailed explanation on the PixVid issue — that makes perfect sense, and I'll apply the CSS workaround.

However, I also reported a second bug that wasn't addressed: reactions (likes) on comments do not update in real time. When a user clicks a reaction button (Like, Love, etc.) on a comment, the UI does not update instantly — a full page reload is required for the reaction to appear correctly.

Is this a known issue? Is there a fix or workaround available for this as well?

Thank you!

Thanks for your patience on this one. I dug into it properly — I set up a clean install of the exact same versions (XenForo 2.3.11 + FCS 2.3.11) and tested comment reactions there, including both the normal Like and the Love reaction via the chooser. On a clean install they update instantly, in place, with no page reload — so this isn't a general bug in the add-on, which means something specific to your site is interrupting the live update.

Here’s a video from a test I ran on the UltraWeb site, where you can try it yourself as well:

The good news is that narrows it down a lot.

Could you check these three things? Any one of them is likely the culprit:

1) Outdated templates. In the Admin CP go to Appearance → Templates and filter by "Outdated". If any Forum Comments System templates show up there (names starting with uw_fcs_ or uw_post_comments), they're customized copies that are out of date with the current add-on — revert or merge them, then retest. This is the most common cause.

2) A JavaScript error from another add-on. Open a thread, press F12 to open the browser console, click a reaction on a comment, and see if a red error appears. If it does, copy it to me. As a quick test, try temporarily disabling PixVid and reacting again.

3) Your style. Switch to the default XenForo style (style chooser at the very bottom of the page) and react on a comment. If it updates live there, the issue is in your custom style.

Let me know what you find on any of these and we'll get it sorted.

xffutureuser updated [UW] Forum Comments System with a new update entry:

Version 2.3.13

  • Fixed: FCS comments were not deleted when their thread was hard-deleted, leaving orphaned rows (all deletion routes now cascade; soft deletes unaffected)
  • Added: uw-fcs: prune-orphaned-comments CLI command to clean up orphans from earlier versions (dry-run by default, --apply to delete) — recommended to run once after upgrading
  • Added: indexes on xf_uw_comment.post_id and xf_uw_comment.thread_id

Version 2.3.14

[UW] Forum Comments System 2.3.14 — Maintenance release

This release fixes the wording of the two comment notification/alert phrases (uw_fcs_commented_on_post and uw_fcs_commented_on_your_post), which shipped with broken English text on all installs.

Fixed
  • Missing space after the sentence end — alerts rendered ".There may be more comments…" instead of ". There may be more comments…"
  • Stray space inside the "a post" link and a doubled space before the thread title...
